Tsavo West National Park
A rugged, scenic wilderness of lava fields, hills and springs, with Big Five wildlife and the famous Mzima Springs.
Why visit Tsavo West National Park?
Tsavo West is the more topographically varied half of the Tsavo ecosystem. Wildlife can be harder to spot in its denser vegetation, but the park rewards travellers with outstanding scenery, volcanic landscapes and distinctive attractions such as Mzima Springs.
A quick, practical view
Highlights
- ✓Excellent wilderness scenery
- ✓Big Five present
- ✓Mzima Springs and volcanic landscapes
- ✓Good birding and varied habitats
Considerations
- •Dense vegetation can make wildlife harder to see
- •Animals are less concentrated than in smaller parks
- •Some viewing areas require long drives
What you can see
Elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino are all present, although sightings—especially predators and rhino—can require patience. Hippo and crocodile are associated with the Mzima Springs system.
The landscape
Lava flows, wooded hills, open valleys, volcanic cones and the clear waters of Mzima Springs make Tsavo West one of Kenya’s most varied safari landscapes.
Things to do
Game drives, visits to Mzima Springs, rhino-sanctuary viewing, birding and landscape photography are the core activities.
When to visit Tsavo West National Park
When to go
June to October and January to February usually provide the driest, easiest game-viewing conditions.
What conditions feel like
The lower areas are hot and dry, while higher western sections are cooler. Seasonal rains can quickly green the landscape and thicken vegetation.
