Overview

Your safari at a glance

This six-day route links three of Kenya's most photogenic landscapes: the freshwater shores of Lake Naivasha, the rhino sanctuary of Lake Nakuru and the open plains of the Masai Mara. Rather than rushing between parks, the pace is built around good light — early starts for sunrise game drives, a relaxed midday break at each lodge, and late-afternoon drives that end close to sunset. Two full days are reserved inside the Mara itself, giving enough time to explore different parts of the reserve, follow up on predator sightings, and wait out a good photographic moment instead of moving on immediately.

Itinerary

Day-by-day safari plan

Day 1

Nairobi to Lake Naivasha

Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel or the airport mid-morning and heads north-west, dropping off the city traffic and climbing into the Great Rift Valley. After a stop at one of the viewpoints overlooking the valley floor, you arrive at Lake Naivasha in time for lunch. The afternoon is free for an optional boat ride among pods of hippo and fish eagles, or a guided walk in Hell's Gate National Park beneath the park's volcanic cliffs. Dinner and overnight at your lakeside lodge.

Day 2

Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru National Park

After an early breakfast, a short two-hour drive brings you to Lake Nakuru National Park, one of the few fenced sanctuaries in Kenya where both black and white rhino are reliably seen. The rest of the day is spent on a game drive through acacia woodland and along the lake shore, looking for rhino, buffalo, giraffe and, depending on water levels, large flocks of flamingo and pelican. You check in to your lodge in the late afternoon in time to watch the light change over the lake from the terrace.

Day 3

Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara

A full morning drive takes you south-west through the Rift Valley escarpment and rolling farmland of Narok county, arriving at the edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve by early afternoon. After lunch at your camp, you head straight into an introductory game drive as the light softens, getting your first look at the wide grassland that makes the Mara one of Africa's most photographed landscapes.

Day 4

Full Day in the Masai Mara

A full day dedicated to the reserve, with an early departure to catch predators still active from the night before. Depending on the season you may follow herds of wildebeest and zebra, watch a pride of lion resting after a hunt, or track cheetah moving across open ground. A packed breakfast and lunch allow you to stay out for the best light rather than returning to camp, with a break back at the lodge in the heat of midday if you prefer.

Day 5

Second Full Day in the Masai Mara

Your second day allows time to explore a different part of the reserve or an adjoining conservancy, where lower vehicle numbers and off-road access give a quieter, more considered pace for photography. Guides use the extra day to follow up on sightings from the day before, wait at a known crossing point on the Mara River, or focus on the smaller detail of the ecosystem — birdlife, tracks and behaviour — between the larger game drives.

Day 6

Masai Mara to Nairobi

A final early-morning game drive gives one more chance at photographs in soft light before breakfast back at camp. Mid-morning you begin the return journey to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon in time for an evening flight or an overnight stay before onward travel.
