This is the most complete itinerary in our Kenya collection, moving from the semi-arid north at Samburu through the Rift Valley lakes to the grassland of the Masai Mara and finishing beneath Kilimanjaro in Amboseli. With two full days allocated to each of the major parks, there is enough time at every stop to properly explore rather than simply pass through, making this route particularly suited to keen photographers and repeat visitors to Kenya who want real depth rather than a fast-moving circuit.
An early departure from Nairobi, passing Mount Kenya's foothills, brings you to Samburu National Reserve by early afternoon. After lunch at your camp, an introductory game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River looks for the reserve's distinctive northern species.
A full day of game drives through Samburu's riverine forest and drier plains, tracking elephant herds at the river, Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe further from the water, and watching for the reserve's resident lion and leopard populations.
A long but scenic drive south takes you back through the highlands and into the Rift Valley, arriving at Lake Nakuru National Park by late afternoon in time for a short game drive before dinner at your lodge.
A final morning game drive at Nakuru, focused on the park's protected rhino population and lakeside birdlife, is followed by the drive to the Masai Mara, arriving in time for an afternoon game drive as the light softens over the plains.
A full day inside the reserve with morning and afternoon game drives, following the guide's read of recent predator activity and, in season, the movement of the wildebeest migration across the plains and river crossings.
A further full day, often spent exploring a neighbouring conservancy for lower vehicle density and off-road access, giving more considered time with sightings and the option of a walking safari or night drive depending on the conservancy's rules.
After a final Mara game drive, the journey continues (by light aircraft or road, depending on the option selected) to Amboseli, arriving in time for lunch and an afternoon game drive across the park's swamp-fed plains beneath Mount Kilimanjaro.
A full day exploring Amboseli's mix of swamp, woodland and open plain, with time dedicated to the park's well-studied elephant herds and, on clear mornings, classic photographs of wildlife set against Kilimanjaro's snow-capped peak.
A further full day allows time to explore different sections of the park, including the swamp edges favoured by hippo and a wide range of waterbirds, along with a visit to a Maasai community if of interest.
A final morning game drive before the drive or flight back to Nairobi, arriving in time for an onward international flight or additional nights in the city.
