Overview

Your safari at a glance

Designed for keen birders and travellers who prefer exploring on foot, this seven-day route stays within the Rift Valley, moving between three of its most productive lakes. Each stop combines a guided walk or boat trip with time dedicated to birdwatching, led by guides experienced in bird identification, and paced more slowly than a typical game-drive safari to allow proper time with each sighting.

Itinerary

Day-by-day safari plan

Day 1

Nairobi to Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate Walk

After the drive from Nairobi and lunch at your tented camp, the afternoon is spent on a guided walking safari through Hell's Gate National Park, looking for Verreaux's eagle and augur buzzard along the cliffs, alongside giraffe, zebra and buffalo on the valley floor.

Day 2

Boat Safari on Lake Naivasha

A morning boat trip on Lake Naivasha focuses on its resident and migrant waterbirds, including African fish eagle, malachite kingfisher and a variety of herons, alongside close views of hippo pods. The afternoon is free for further birding around the camp grounds, which attract a good range of woodland species.

Day 3

Lake Naivasha to Lake Nakuru National Park

A short drive brings you to Lake Nakuru National Park by midday. The afternoon game drive combines general wildlife viewing — including the park's protected rhino population — with birding along the lake shore, which can hold large numbers of flamingo and pelican depending on water levels.

Day 4

Full Day Birding and Game Drive at Lake Nakuru

A full day inside the park allows time for both a dedicated birding walk in permitted areas near the lodge and a game drive through the surrounding woodland and grassland, which holds species such as lilac-breasted roller, grey crowned crane and a variety of raptors alongside the park's mammals.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru to Lake Baringo

The drive north into the drier Baringo basin takes you out of the main tourist circuit and into a quieter, more remote landscape. After checking in to your camp on the lake shore, an evening walk around the grounds introduces you to some of the more than 470 bird species recorded in the area.

Day 6

Boat Safari and Birding at Lake Baringo

A full day dedicated to Lake Baringo's birdlife, with a boat trip to look for goliath heron, African darter and fish eagle, and a guided walk with a local ornithologist guide to nearby cliffs and acacia woodland known for owls, nightjars and other specialities.

Day 7

Lake Baringo to Nairobi

An early final walk around camp before the long drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon in time for an evening flight or overnight stay.
