Overview

Your safari at a glance

This short private safari concentrates all two nights in Amboseli so your time is spent watching wildlife rather than changing parks. Travel from Nairobi in a private safari vehicle, settle into a mid-range lodge or tented camp, and explore Amboseli at the times when the light and wildlife activity are strongest. Early mornings are reserved for the best chance of clear Mount Kilimanjaro views, while the swamp systems and open plains provide excellent opportunities to watch elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and birdlife. Because the vehicle is private, game-drive timing can be adapted to your interests, family pace and photographic priorities.

Itinerary

Day-by-day safari plan

Day 1

Nairobi to Amboseli – First Game Drive Beneath Kilimanjaro

Your private driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel or the airport early in the morning. Leaving the city behind, you travel south across the Athi-Kapiti plains toward Amboseli, with a comfort stop en route. The landscape becomes progressively drier as Mount Kilimanjaro begins to dominate the southern horizon. You reach your lodge or tented camp around lunchtime, check in and have time to settle before the afternoon game drive. The first drive introduces Amboseli’s contrast of dusty plains and green spring-fed wetlands. Elephant families are often the headline sighting, but the route can also produce zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, hippo and a wide range of raptors and waterbirds. Your guide times the final part of the drive around the softer evening light, when Kilimanjaro may emerge from cloud. Return to camp for dinner and your first night in the Amboseli ecosystem.

Day 2

Sunrise Elephants, Swamps & Observation Hill

Start before breakfast so you are inside the park in the cool early light, when wildlife is active and the chances of a clear Kilimanjaro view are often strongest. The morning route is deliberately flexible: if elephant herds are moving across the open plains, you can spend time positioning respectfully for photography; if predators have been reported, your guide can follow up on those sightings instead. After breakfast, continue toward the Enkongo Narok and Ol Tukai wetland systems, where elephants feed in the marshes and hippos, buffalo and waterbirds concentrate around permanent water. Around midday, return to the lodge for lunch and a rest during the hottest hours. Later in the afternoon, head out again for a different section of the park and a stop at Observation Hill, the permitted viewpoint overlooking the swamps and surrounding plains. An optional Maasai cultural visit can be arranged outside the core game-drive programme. Finish with a sunset drive before returning for dinner.

Day 3

Final Sunrise Drive – Amboseli to Nairobi

Take one final early game drive before breakfast, using the morning to revisit a productive area or look for a species you have not yet seen. This short final drive is especially worthwhile for elephant silhouettes, early bird activity and another opportunity to photograph Kilimanjaro if conditions are clear. Return to camp for breakfast, check out and begin the road journey back to Nairobi. A lunch stop is included en route depending on the final timing. Arrival in Nairobi is normally in the mid-to-late afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or at the airport for an onward flight.
