3-Day Masai Mara Big Cats Private Safari
Overview

Your safari at a glance

This is a classic short Masai Mara safari for travellers who want their own vehicle and guide rather than a shared departure. The road journey from Nairobi includes the Great Rift Valley and rural Narok County before reaching the Mara in time for an afternoon game drive. Day 2 is deliberately kept as a full reserve day so your guide can react to sightings instead of following a rigid circuit. Depending on wildlife movements and season, the focus may shift between lion prides, cheetah on open ground, leopard territories, elephant, large plains-game herds and the Mara River. The private format also makes the safari easy to adapt for photographers, couples and families.

Itinerary

Day-by-day safari plan

Day 1

Nairobi to Masai Mara – Rift Valley to the Savannah

Meet your private driver-guide in Nairobi after an early breakfast and drive west toward the Great Rift Valley. Stop at a viewpoint for photographs before descending toward Narok, the main Maasai town on the route to the reserve. Continue through changing farmland and open country to the Masai Mara, arriving around lunchtime or early afternoon depending on road conditions and your camp location. After check-in and lunch, head out in your private 4x4 for the first game drive. Rather than trying to cover the entire reserve immediately, the afternoon focuses on the wildlife-rich area closest to camp, allowing time with the first good sightings of lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra and antelope. Cheetah are often most visible on open ground, while leopard may require more patient tracking near riverine vegetation. Remain out through the final hour of daylight before returning to camp for dinner.

Day 2

Full Day Masai Mara – Big Cats, Mara River & Picnic in the Reserve

After an early breakfast, leave camp with a picnic lunch for a full day in the reserve. This is the key advantage of the itinerary: there is no inter-park transfer today, so the route can be shaped entirely around wildlife. Your guide begins with areas known for early predator activity, following fresh tracks and guide reports while avoiding unnecessary rushing between distant sightings. As the day develops, continue across open grasslands used by zebra, wildebeest, topi and gazelle, with regular stops for elephants and giraffe. When conditions and current wildlife movement make it worthwhile, travel toward the Mara River to explore hippo and crocodile habitat and, during migration months, the broader crossing areas. Lunch is taken at a safe designated picnic point in the reserve. The afternoon continues with a different game-viewing circuit, using the softer light for photography and a final search for predators before returning to camp near sunset.

Day 3

Early Game Drive – Masai Mara to Nairobi

Begin with a short pre-breakfast or early-morning game drive, depending on your camp location and departure preference. The cooler hours provide one last chance to find predators before they settle for the day and to photograph the plains in low morning light. Return for breakfast, check out and begin the drive back toward Nairobi. Pause in Narok or along the Rift Valley route for lunch and comfort stops. You arrive in Nairobi later in the afternoon for drop-off at your hotel or transfer to the airport.
