Overview

Your safari at a glance

This four-day route is intentionally different from the classic southern circuits. It travels north through Kenya’s central highlands to the semi-arid Samburu ecosystem, where distinctive northern species live along the Ewaso Nyiro River. Samburu and Buffalo Springs provide two complementary game-viewing areas, while the final night at Ol Pejeta shifts the emphasis toward rhino conservation, open Laikipia scenery and the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary. The itinerary works especially well for travellers who have already seen the Masai Mara or who want a short safari with strong conservation content.

Itinerary

Day-by-day safari plan

Day 1

Nairobi to Samburu – Mount Kenya Highlands to the Ewaso Nyiro

Depart Nairobi early and travel north through fertile central Kenya, passing agricultural highlands and the Mount Kenya region before descending toward the warmer semi-arid landscapes of Samburu. Arrive at your lodge around lunchtime and settle in before the first afternoon game drive. Follow tracks toward the Ewaso Nyiro River, which acts as the ecological lifeline of the reserve. Elephant herds frequently move between the river and surrounding feeding grounds, while the riverine woodland provides good habitat for predators. Your guide starts the search for Samburu’s northern specialties, including reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra and gerenuk. Remain out through the softer evening light before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 2

Samburu & Buffalo Springs – Special Five and River Wildlife

Start before breakfast with a cool early-morning drive in Samburu, concentrating on predator activity and elephant movement close to the river. After breakfast, continue the wildlife search and cross into the wider Samburu–Buffalo Springs ecosystem, depending on current access and sightings. The day focuses on the species that make Northern Kenya different from the country’s southern parks: Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, long-necked gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich. Return to the lodge for lunch and a midday break, then head out again in the late afternoon to explore another game-drive circuit. Lion, leopard and cheetah are all possible, while elephant activity near the Ewaso Nyiro often becomes a highlight. Return after sunset light for dinner.

Day 3

Samburu to Ol Pejeta – From Arid North to Laikipia Conservation Country

Take one final early Samburu drive before breakfast, then check out and travel south toward the Laikipia plateau. The scenery becomes greener as you approach the Mount Kenya region and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Arrive for lunch and begin the afternoon conservation-focused safari programme. Game viewing here differs from Samburu: black and white rhinos become an important target, alongside lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and plains game. Visit the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary when operating conditions and confirmed timings allow, then continue on an evening game drive across the conservancy. As sunset approaches, Mount Kenya may be visible beyond the plains. Dinner and overnight are at a lodge or camp in or near Ol Pejeta.

Day 4

Ol Pejeta Morning Safari – Return to Nairobi

Begin with an early game drive across Ol Pejeta while wildlife is active and the light is soft. Your guide concentrates on rhino habitat, open plains and any strong predator sightings reported that morning. Return for breakfast and check out. If there is a conservation stop included in the confirmed programme that was not possible the previous afternoon, it can be completed before departure. Travel south toward Nairobi with a lunch stop along the route, arriving in the mid-to-late afternoon for hotel or airport drop-off.
