Overview

Your safari at a glance

This itinerary is built for travellers who want to experience Kenya's landscapes more actively than from a vehicle alone. On the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy, guided cycling routes are permitted alongside plains game away from predators, giving a genuinely different perspective on the bush. The trip finishes at Lake Naivasha, where cycling and walking are also possible around Hell's Gate National Park, combined with a boat ride on the lake.

Itinerary

Day-by-day safari plan

Day 1

Nairobi to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

The drive north from Nairobi passes through the town of Nanyuki, with Mount Kenya visible on clear days, arriving at Ol Pejeta by early afternoon. After lunch, an orientation game drive introduces you to the conservancy and its rhino sanctuary, with the resident population of black and southern white rhino, along with the northern white rhino under specialist protection.

Day 2

Cycling and Wildlife on Ol Pejeta Conservancy

A guided cycling route takes you through sections of the conservancy where plains game such as zebra, giraffe and various antelope can be approached on two wheels under close guide supervision, well away from predator territory. The afternoon includes a visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary, home to chimps rescued from unsafe conditions elsewhere in Africa, and an optional night game drive after dinner to look for nocturnal species.

Day 3

Ol Pejeta to Lake Naivasha

A scenic drive south through the Rift Valley farmland brings you to Lake Naivasha by the afternoon. After checking in to your lakeside lodge, the rest of the day is free, with an optional boat ride among hippo pods and fish eagles.

Day 4

Hell's Gate Cycling and Walking Safari

A short transfer takes you into Hell's Gate National Park, one of the few parks in Kenya where you can walk or cycle without an armed escort due to the absence of dangerous predators. A guided route through the park's gorge and beneath its volcanic cliffs brings you close to giraffe, zebra and buffalo on foot or by bike, followed by lunch back at the lodge and a free afternoon on the lake.

Day 5

Lake Naivasha to Nairobi

After breakfast, a short two-hour drive returns you to Nairobi, arriving in time for an afternoon flight or additional nights in the city.
